Could Maple Syrup be Good for Diabetes?

21st century science has recently revealed that the maple syrup contains polyphenols (powerful antioxidants) and comparable to fruits and vegetables suchGlass bottle of maple syrup as broccoli.

Addtional research condoucted by Dr. Yves Desjardins and his colleagues at INAF report that these two products also contain significant amount of terpenes.  Particularly abcisic acid, a phytohormone that was recently discovered to have beneficial health effects.

The maple sap and maple syrup therefore contain the conjugated abscisic acid and a number of metabolites in therapeutic concentration near the thresholds according to numbers reported by the ABA group of Dr. Guri United States.

Indeed, the physiological action of abscisic acid in plants has long been known by plant physiologists and researchers in botany, but its benefits on human health have only been reported recently.

This acid is recognized, inter alia, to stimulate the release of insulin from pancreatic cells and increase the sensitivity of fat cells to insulin, which makes it therapeutic for metabolic syndromes including diabetes.

According to Geneviève Béland, director of promotion and market development of the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, ” this discovery is an indication that maple products offer a synergistic complex of active elements. The sugar molecules are a source of energy and the sweetness of maple products are complemented by abscisic acid molecules as they promote insulin homeostasis. Of course, additional studies are needed to clearly demonstrate the effect of the consumption of maple products on insulin dynamics .

Detailed results of the study will be presented by Dr. Desjardins at the 28th International Congress of Horticulture in Portugal (Lisbon) from August 22nd to the 27th 2010.

Note that Dr. Yves Desjardins has been a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at Laval University since 1991. He is an active member of the Horticultural Research Center, where he conducts research into the  horticulture and fruit and vegetable and also researches  more fundamental ecophysiology of in vitro cultures. Dr Desjardins is also a major contributor to the International Network of Maple Innovation coordinated by the Federation of Maple Syrup Producers on behalf of the Canadian maple industry.

Quebec accounts for about 80% of world production of maple syrup.

Consult your doctor before increasing your intake of anything, including maple syrup  if you are diabetic.

Maple syrup contains substantial quantities of abscisic acid, a phytohormone known to stimulate insulin release through pancreatic cells and to increase sensitivity of fat cells to insulin, which makes it a potent weapon against metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

Before adding maple syrup to your diabetic diet talk to both your doctor and diabetes educator so that they can monitor any changes that you make in your diet and accurately document your blood chemistry.

Really? This is new to me. I love eating sweets especially during special occasions. Im really worried that sooner I will have my diabetes. I cant put away sweet foods and delicacies. If this kind of study will develop, then maybe Im the one who could benefit by it and many other people who are worried with their sugar intake in their body. LOLest. =)
